(I know it’s not a flying horse. Use your imagination.)
Instead of falling asleep last night, I was wondering if Pegasus was a flying horse. As in the only flying horse or a species of flying horses. I pondered that for quite a while before thinking, “God should have made some of those”.
If there were flying horses, would anyone have bothered to invent airplanes or would they have just been off flying around on their horses?
Would I have flown to Baltimore on my horse this week? And what kind of apparel would we need for horse flying? My outfit would have been red, linen, matching the trim on my flying horses saddle and the ribbons braided in his hair. Yeah with white pompoms on his wing covers. (It was raining, so yeah I said wing covers.)
Would there be horse flying sports and recreations? Would hotels have flying horse stables?
That’s about the time I realized one of us didn’t take our medication to stop obsessive thoughts. No wonder one of us wasn’t falling asleep.
P.S. I had an anxiety attack on the airplane and was nauseous all day long. I bet I wouldn’t have been anxious riding my flying horse.
Deep question. Really deep. The problem is I’m not deep enough to answer them. Ho-hum.

Well, I can answer at least ONE of those questions 😛 The Pegasus of Greek mythology was a single horse, not a species. Now, when it comes to wondering what would’ve happened if there had been a whole species, I’ll leave that to those who create stories about such creatures. Too many variables makes my brain hurt.

It can also keep a person up at night. Thanks for the comment, Mauen.

If newborn foals can walk, can newborn flying horses flutter around six inches off the ground? What a sight that would be!

I don’t know. Seems like the up and down motions of a flying horse would give us all airsickness. Or is it horsesickness? Pegasickness?

I think they may reside with the unicorns in Japan now. 🙂 I also think unicorns may be a better choice of transport as far as safety goes, because of their horn. hahahhaa! I make me laugh sometimes.

That was such lovely imagery and a small silver lining from forgetting to take your medication. I do exactly the same thing – ‘Why am I wired, did I take my meds?’

Interesting post! I think Pegasus was a single creature, like the minotaur.

Pegasus resulted when the horse god Poseidon mated with the gorgon Medusa. Well, I happen to know a woman who’s a real gorgon, so if somebody can just provide a horse-god, we can get this project going! Flying horses for all!

Now, if you want to go over the top wondering about weird stuff… If horses could fly, would they have hollow bones like birds? And would they weigh a lot less than regular horses?

The fossil record clearly shows that horses once had wings. What likely happened is that when people started riding them, they became too heavy to fly. So, naturally, after several generations the wings degenerated into tiny stumps, eventually becoming shoulder blades. The horse’s distant cousin, the American Bison, or buffalo, has a small sub-species that are cultivated exclusively for their delicious wings. You can read a full write-up on it in “Nothing, Because I Made This Up Magazine”.

Just like our tastes evolved from horses to cars, so would we still invent the flying machines. But it would be cool to experience that bird’s eye view and special rush while riding a winged stallion.

Hey Lou,
I would hope we would be smart enough to stick with the flying horses, but you’re probably right.
Thanks.

Always wondered about those images of floating gowns of riders….must be a special breed of horses – all ours would sweat and make bare legs sting like crazy.

To answer your question about inventing airplanes if there were flying horses-A long time ago people used to travel by horse on the roads and now we have cars so if we invented a machine to replace walking horses whose to say we wouldn’t invent a machine to replace flying horses?
