“My first mistake, falling in love with my enemy. My second, not killing him when I had the chance.” The first line of The Novel With No Name and hasn’t been started yet. What do you think?
I was challenged to try First Line Friday by Rami Ungart at https://ramiungarthewriter.wordpress.com/. Okay, Rami I accept your challenge.
You can play along at home. Here’s what you do.
- Create a post on your blog titled #FirstLineFriday, hashtag and all.
- Explain the rules like I’m doing now.
- Post the first one or two lines of a potential work, a work-in-progress, or a completed or published story.
- Ask your readers for feedback and then encourage them to try #FirstLineFriday on their blogs (tagging is encouraged but not necessary).
I presume you mean, ‘when’ I had the chance. As soon as I read this, I thought, well, that’s the story told, intrigue and mystery, over. I would start it like this, I should’ve killed him when I had the chance, but then, I wouldn’t have fallen in love with him.

Ooooh, Love it! I am left wondering…did she fall in love at first sight? Or, did she fall in love after knowing her enemy? In that case, wouldn’t her first mistake be not killing him when she had the chance?

Hi Caryn,
Interesting take, but no it’s in the right order.

I love it! I really enjoy stories where I know that the end is going to probably be heartbreaking up front. I recently watched the Last 5 Years and it uses a (sort of) retrospective model.
Now I want to know why you’re enemies, what could make you fall in love with you enemy, how is love being defined, and when were you in a position to kill him.

Romance definitely. Probably paranormal or fantasy.

Kinda like that, this was from a post on Facebook where I was encouraged to make up how I met a friend of mine:
I met Paul at a dance gig, he was dancing with a blonde … I forget her name. He suggested I move my reed up past the tip to get a bigger sound on my bari sax. I told him he was a terrible dancer. The blonde just laughed and laughed …

OK I wanna see where this goes. Had she killed him in the first place, she wouldn’t’ve had time to fall in love with him. You have my attention. Please Continue Diedra😊

I think it’s good! But man, the first person viewpoint seems difficult to sustain.

P.S. I went back to my Reader page and entered the firstlinefriday tag to search on, but Diedra’s post doesn’t show there. But it does show in the sites I follow. Does anyone know if it doesn’t show in the tag search because WP is smart enough to know I am already following Diedra? Sorry for going off topic.

This is such great advice. When I’m in a writing slump, I often need just a line or two–and encouragement–to keep going.

I like it, good hook. Makes me wonder if she’s regretting not killing him.

It’s gives a solid picture of what’s to come, but leaves just enough room to make a person interested. I approve.

That is a strong opening bid. Don’t drown it with all that introspective non-sense put forth in the Divergent series and Twilight. Please?
